If you’re a fan of alternate history, historical fantasy, or just an all-around great tale, I highly recommend it. The rural areas of the country are quite deserted, populated with wild animals such as catamounts.
The story line shares the quasi-steampunk themes of books like Lest Darkness Fall and The Dragon Waiting, while being truly unique. England falls before the Spanish, and the Reformation pavaje swept away.
We see life through the eyes of a steam train driver, from the perspective of a boy who joins the semaphore guild electronic communications being banned or unknownas brother in a religious craftsman order called to work for the inquisition, from the perspective of pavvane wealthy commoner being pursued by a nobleman and from the vantage point of a noblewoman.
No spoon-feeding of plot or purpose. It is in the form of a pavane, a slow and stately dance of the period, the sections structured here as AABBC where C is the coda or tailpiece and A and B contrasting melodies. To me this felt forced, as though Roberts decided he had beaten too hard on Roman Catholicism and needed to back off a roberhs, a backdown that lessens the impact of his excellent novel somewhat.
Almost but not quite. As a consequence, while Spanish power eventually wanes, the Roman Catholic Church has no rivals and the Pope becomes the effective secular, as well as spiritual, ruler over Europe.

However, the whole contains a thread of gradual change, growing with each story and culminating in profound alteration. The Church has electricity, people know they have been repressed, and there are rumors of revolution.

A brief prologue provides an introduction to the dance. On his deputation to a remote semaphore for the winter he faces his fate. Roberts, meanwhile, writes with the lyrical grace of a poet; take this little window into a traction engine shed from the first pages of chapter one:.
